Selfridge knew he was minutes, if not seconds, from being found out. But that was fine. He and his team had hacked into the hospital computer system from a car in the parking lot several days ago. They went in through a cardiac ECG system that was a few years old and so more vulnerable to hacking than newer devices. But there were 10 other ways into the system that would have been just as easy.

In October 2020, the FBI warned of "increased and imminent cybercrime threat to U.S. hospitals and health care providers" and asked that providers take precautions. But the attacks aren't new. Hospitals, as well as smaller medical practices and outpatient facilities, have been facing ransomware hacks since at least 2016. Cybercriminals deployed ransomware against more than 1,300 U.S. health care facilities over the last 2 years, according to reports in HIPAA Journal.
Still, the issue seems to have reached a turning point. In September 2020, in a widely reported case, a woman in Dusseldorf, Germany, died after a hospital rerouted her to a facility 20 miles away because hackers had shut down their computer systems.
For many in the cybersecurity industry, the case was a watershed moment: It was the first public report of a hospital death that may have been a direct result of a ransomware attack. And although some argued the woman might have died even if she'd been admitted sooner, the story highlighted a much broader point that hospital ransomware attacks can take a serious toll on patient care.
In fact, ransomware attacks, particularly on hospitals, have become so easy that wannabe cybercriminals can buy ready-made ransomware kits from the dark web. Some of these kits even provide a help desk, with English-speaking attendants to assist the criminals and, in some cases, the victims as well.
Last month, a worldwide cyberattack by a ransomware called WannaCry shut down 65 hospitals in the United Kingdom, and affected not just computers but storage refrigerators and MRI machines. Last January, Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles paid out $17,000 after hackers took control of its computers.

Pneumonia can make it hard to breathe. You may feel like you've run up a flight of stairs when you were just sitting still. Your doctor can tell that you have pneumonia and not just a cold by listening with a stethoscope for crackle sounds in your chest. You may need a chest x-ray or blood tests to know for sure that you have pneumonia. If bacteria caused your pneumonia, your doctor can give you antibiotics, drugs that kill bacteria. Keep taking the antibiotic until you finish the whole prescription so you don't re-infect yourself. To help loosen all of that mucus clogging your lungs, breathe in the warm mist from a humidifier and drink plenty of water. Take it easy too. Don't try to run back to work and infect everyone else. Rest until you feel better. Whatever you do, don't smoke, it will only make your pneumonia worse. If your pneumonia is really severe or you have another serious health problem, your doctor may recommend that you get treated in the hospital. While there, you'll get antibiotics and fluids through a vein. You may also be given oxygen to help you breathe easier. The best way to deal with pneumonia is to avoid getting it in the first place. Older adults, children, and people with serious conditions like diabetes, asthma, cancer, and emphysema should talk to their doctor about getting vaccinated against pneumonia and the illnesses that cause it. Once you get treated, your pneumonia should clear up within a couple of weeks. Your doctor may want to check your lungs to make sure they're clear. Sometimes pneumonia can lead to serious lung complications, so call your doctor right away if your breathing problems get worse, you have chest pain, or you cough up blood.
In September, the computer systems of three Ontario hospitals were crippled by a ransomware virus, an attack in which hackers encrypt data and demand payment to unlock it. And earlier in 2019, a similar attack hit Health Sciences North, shutting down computer systems across northern Ontario.
Hackers also hone in on medical records because hospitals and health care organizations are often easy to hack, Reuters reports. "Hospitals have low security," according to cybersecurity expert Dave Kennedy, "so it's relatively easy for these hackers to get a large amount of personal data for medical fraud."
The list of vulnerable devices is growing as the wired world expands. Hackers have shut down hospital diagnostic systems to extract ransom, King says.
